The EU must show unity towards UK

BDI President Dieter Kempf comments on Theresa May’s speech.

“The speech of UK Prime Minister Theresa May shows that the UK is preparing for a hard Brexit. This means that the United Kingdom will be leaving the European single market. At least we now have clarity.

German industry unanimously calls for clear new rules to be established between the EU and the United Kingdom. The EU must show unity towards the UK. In the negotiations following the Brexit vote, policy in Brussels and Berlin must be geared to one objective only: to keep Europe together and make it stronger. The four freedoms of the European Union are unshakable, there can be no borders within the EU for goods and services, capital and workers.

Companies now need legal certainty and transparency regarding the new structure of our relations with the United Kingdom. The EU is the engine of growth and employment in Europe. To keep it running smoothly we need contractual arrangements between us and the UK.”
