The EU is currently negotiating the draft amendment to the EU Urban Waste Water Directive (UWWTD) in the trilogue, which introduces extended producer responsibility in water law for the human pharmaceuticals and cosmetics sectors. Intentions are to finance the so-called fourth treatment stage, which eliminates trace substances such as pharmaceuticals, detergents and cleaning agents, cosmetics and biocides.
