Anders Fogh Rasmussen

Founder, Alliance of Democracies Foundation

Anders Fogh Rasmussen has been at the centre of European and global politics for three decades as Secretary General of NATO, Prime Minister of Denmark, Danish Minister of Economic Affairs, Danish Minister for Taxation and a leading Danish parliamentarian. Currently, Mr. Rasmussen is co-author with Andriy Yermak of recommendations for security guarantees for Ukraine, on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

As NATO’s 12th Secretary General between 2009 and 2014, Mr. Rasmussen oversaw the Alliance’s operational peak with six operations on three continents. He developed a new Strategic Concept, which sets the Alliance’s future priorities, and launched “Smart Defence” to help nations use their resources more efficiently through multinational cooperation. In response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, he initiated a “Readiness Action Plan” to strengthen the collective defence to an unprecedented level since the end of the Cold War.

On 1 October 2014, Mr. Rasmussen established Rasmussen Global. The firm advises sovereign and multinational clients on a wide range of issues such as international security, transatlantic relations, the European Union, and emerging markets. Rasmussen Global draws on an extensive global network of leading policy experts, former officials, and business executives. Since 2014 Mr. Rasmussen has worked closely on issues relating to Ukraine’s international support, including recently advising (pro-bono) President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on security guarantees.

In 2017, Mr. Rasmussen founded the Alliance of Democracies Foundation. In this role, he hosts the annual Copenhagen Democracy Summit, which is now widely considered as the new ‘Davos’ for democrats. He chairs the Transatlantic Commission on Election Integrity, which, among others, include Joe Biden, Michael Chertoff, and Felipe Calderon.

“Getting this right means laying a new cornerstone of European security. Failing to do so, means an open-ended crisis on European soil.” – Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the adoption of the security guarantees for Ukraine

World in Transition – How do Politics and Economy Secure Global Resilience?

    Panel

The pandemic and the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine have revealed with brutal clarity the vulnerability of Western industrialized nations. To date, the partners in the EU and NATO have been able to cope with the consequences. But the next shakeup of the security architecture, of supply chains, value creation and values, may be lurking just around the corner. Security cannot be taken for granted anymore for the foreseeable future. Potential challenges and untapped opportunities worldwide raise the question of what a long-term, comprehensive design for global resilience might look like.
