H2goesRail, or: Why Does Rail Transportation Need Green Hydrogen?

Through H2goesRail, Deutsche Bahn, DB Regio, and DB Energie—in collaboration with Siemens Mobility—are testing a new integrated hydrogen system consisting of a hydrogen-powered train and a hydrogen refueling system. The project was first unveiled in early May 2022 at the Siemens plant in Krefeld. For Deutsche Bahn, hydrogen trains are a key component on the path to climate neutrality by 2040. They are intended to enable CO2-free rail transport even on non-electrified routes. Christian Pieper of DB Energie GmbH reports on the next steps.
