With solar power: parcel logistics on the water
Solar energy is not only a sustainable form of power generation on house roofs and agricultural land. It also gives parcel logistics a boost, as an innovative pilot project in Berlin shows.
The Green Solution for Non-Electrified Railroad Lines
In the fight against the climate crisis, the mobility of the future plays a crucial role. New mobility concepts are needed to reduce CO2 emissions. One solution for a better climate is hydrogen. In this interview, Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, and Albrecht Neumann, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, explain what the future of public transit looks like and why hydrogen technology plays a key role in it.
H2goesRail, or: Why Does Rail Transportation Need Green Hydrogen?
Through H2goesRail, Deutsche Bahn, DB Regio, and DB Energie—in collaboration with Siemens Mobility—are testing a new integrated hydrogen system consisting of a hydrogen-powered train and a hydrogen refueling system. The project was first unveiled in early May 2022 at the Siemens plant in Krefeld. For Deutsche Bahn, hydrogen trains are a key component on the path to climate neutrality by 2040. They are intended to enable CO2-free rail transport even on non-electrified routes. Christian Pieper of DB Energie GmbH reports on the next steps.
Rail and Road—Intermodal Transport as Key Part of Green Logistics
There is still a lot that needs to happen to meet the climate goals by 2030. Intermodal transport can be seen as the key to a greater shift toward rail and green logistics. In this interview, Sebastian Ruckes, Executive Director of the Shift 2030 initiative, explains the benefits of this approach and the potential compromises that may need to be made.
Why a Shift Toward Sustainable and Resource-Efficient Logistics Is Necessary
Logistics is a key driver of global trade, economic growth, and individual prosperity—but it also has an enormous impact on the environment. Volker Ratzmann, Executive Vice President of Corporate Public Affairs at Deutsche Post DHL Group, explains how the transition to a climate-neutral transportation sector and green logistics can be achieved, and what policy framework is necessary to make this happen.
Industry Makes Logistics Climate-Neutral
The German economy is on the path toward carbon neutrality. The road ahead is long and challenging, but there is no alternative: If we want to remain an industrialized nation, industry must succeed in replacing the fossil fuel foundation on which it was built over the past century and a half with a new, decarbonized, and renewable foundation. The challenge: The foundation must be replaced while operations continue—without the house collapsing in the process.
