From May 4 to 8, 2026, a delegation of leading Colombian companies from the hydrogen sector visited Berlin and Hamburg. The trip took place as part of the German-Colombian CatalHyst project, which the BDI is implementing in collaboration with the Colombian business association ANDI. The intensive exchange with German stakeholders made it clear that deeper cooperation in the hydrogen sector offers great potential for both countries.

Mexico’s geographic location and privileged access to the U.S. market through the USMCA make it an attractive destination for many international companies. In addition, the country offers a large domestic market, political stability, an extensive network of free trade agreements and a well-trained technical workforce.

Under the motto “Working Together for more Resilience”, leading representatives from German and Brazilian business, politics and academia came together in Hanover on April 19 and 20, 2026, for the 42nd German-Brazilian Economic Meeting.

Colombia is Latin America’s largest exporter of hard coal. In light of dwindling reserves, the country committed in 2015 to the ambitious goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent by 2030. The use of green hydrogen and its derivatives could make a decisive contribution to achieving these goals. This is where a joint project between the BDI and the Colombian business association ANDI comes in.

Under the titel “New Partnerships for a Sustainable Economy,” representatives from the German and Brazilian business, political, and academic communities gathered in Salvador da Bahia on June 16 and 17, 2025, for the 41st German-Brazilian Economic Meeting.

Economic cooperation with Latin America offers considerable potential. In response to this growing importance, the BDI established the Latin America Committee of German Business (LADW) in 2015.

Brazil has the potential to be a strong economic partner: a diverse industrial base, vast agricultural lands, natural resources, and a young, consumption-oriented population. However, the country must modernize and expand its industrial sector to remain competitive. Brazil is Latin America’s largest economy and the fifth-largest country in the world, with a population of over 215 million.

Mit der Einreichung der Beschlussvorlage für das EU-Mercosur-Abkommen durch die EU-Kommission an den Rat im September 2025 ist ein entscheidender Schritt getan. Nun müssen die Mitgliedsstaaten alles daransetzen, dass die Ratifizierung zügig gelingt. Das Abkommen würde einen Markt von mehr als 700 Millionen Verbraucherinnen und Verbrauchern schaffen, eine der größten Handelszonen weltweit. Es eröffnet neue Chancen für Unternehmen, stärkt Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und erleichtert den Zugang zu wichtigen Märkten und Rohstoffen. Zugleich setzt es ein klares Signal für Offenheit und fairen, regelbasierten Handel in Zeiten zunehmenden Protektionismus.

In geopolitisch schwierigen Zeiten müssen Deutschland und Europa Ausschau halten nach neuen Partnern in der Welt. Lateinamerika spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Der Ausbau der bereits engen wirtschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit – insbesondere mit Brasilien – bietet auch der deutschen Industrie neue Impulse. Bei den Deutsch-Brasilianischen Wirtschaftstagen im Juni werden wir untersuchen, wie Kooperationen in den Bereichen Dekarbonisierung, Digitalisierung, Kreislaufwirtschaft, Innovationen und der Ausbau nachhaltiger Infrastrukturen konkret aussehen könnten. Auf der Konferenz vom 22. bis 24. September in Wolfsburg haben wir intensiv für den Abschluss des EU-Mercosur Handelsabkommen getrommelt. Alle Teilnehmenden waren sich über die wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und ökologischen Vorteile einig, die das Abkommen in dieser Größenordnung mit sich bringt.

The European Union recently published a new agenda for the EU's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean in June. BDI and LADW welcome this initiative. The new geopolitical reality has a major impact on international economic relations. The wish to diversify markets is great and Latin America has much to offer. The EU shares this view and proposes the following priorities in its cooperation.
