Defining "Mittelstand" for targeted policies remains a task in Berlin and Brussels. In 2005, the EU defined micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with threshold values. In the process, many companies in the industrial Mittelstand sector are being overlooked. Therefore, policy-makers should quickly introduce "Midcaps" as a supplementary category. In parallel, it would be helpful to review the SME definition.
