Thomas Thiemann

Senior Vice President of Energy Transition Technologies
Siemens Energy

Prof. Dr. Thomas Thiemann studied mechanical engineering and energy technology at Ruhr University Bochum. After earning his doctorate at the Institute of Energy Technology, he spent five years in the iron and steel industry working on the optimization of industrial manufacturing processes through laboratory testing, 3D simulations, and measurements in operating plants.

He joined Siemens in 2001 and held various leadership positions in the power generation sector, including ten years as Global Head of R&D for Siemens Steam Turbines.
In 2018, he was assigned the special task of leading an Energy Transition Team to develop decarbonization concepts for existing industrial plants and infrastructure in collaboration with customers and partners. A particular focus here was on evaluating the techno-economic aspects of various technology options. In this context, he initiated corresponding R&D activities and built development teams for the industrialization of new technologies.

Building on this experience, he was appointed Senior Vice President for Energy Transition Technologies in 2020. In this role, he works to further develop Siemens Energy’s decarbonization portfolio in line with market requirements and techno-economic assessments.
Prof. Dr. Thiemann holds numerous patents and awards and is also active in external roles:
He serves on the board of several associations, collaborates closely with government institutions, participates in international conferences and doctoral committees, and lectures at the University of Bochum. In addition, Prof. Dr. Thiemann serves on several boards of trustees and is active as an industry expert.
